Grades 1–2
Real books, read together, then written about
Two live classes a week in groups of four or five: one for reading, one for writing and skills.
Free, friendly, no tests.

What your child will be able to do
Grade 1
Understand and retell stories, read with growing confidence, and write clear sentences.
Grade 2
Read chapter books on their own, learn new words every class, and write well-built paragraphs.
Language Skills
Grammar and spelling are taught step by step, with short quizzes for both grades.
What one week looks like
Session 1 · Reading
Grade 1: the teacher reads the book with the group, then they read it again together. Grade 2: children read a chapter book at home, and class time is for words, ideas and discussion.
Session 2 · Writing and language skills
A warm-up, a writing lesson, then short practice.
Session length: 1 hour
Start reading chapter books
- Build stamina with picture books in Grade 1, and move to early chapter books.
- Start real chapter books in Grade 2.
- We post the books to you before classes start. They're your child's to keep and write in.
- If your child finds the book hard, we help them into it. We don't swap it for an easier one.

For parents
reading every day matters, even just 15 minutes!
- Encourage your child to read 10–15 minutes a day.
- Homework each week: reading, one writing task, and short quizzes or worksheets.
- You don't need to sit in on classes. Just be nearby in case your child needs help.
What parents say
from real TLH parents
“My daughter joined in 2nd grade to build her reading habits. It built her confidence and her reading skills. She went from chapter books to novels, and she was so excited to write and publish her own book at such a young age.”
“We love the class sizes and the attention each of our children gets. Our two children learn differently, and the teacher recognised that and quickly changed how they're taught. We'd tried another program for a year without much growth. Here, we see steady growth.”
